Get to know the filmmaker:

1. What motivated you to make this film?

Ever since I came to the US in 2001, I have dealt with some racism myself for being Middle Eastern, and I also noticed how Blacks can be treated in an unjust manner. So I figured I will try to find a way to connect both my experience and their experience somehow. Given all the events that have happened in 2020: the killing of a few innocent black people by the hands of a few untrained and prejudice cops, along with the Black Lives Matter movement (before it turned into an organization), I figured this would be a good time to tell this…

matthewtoffolo's avatarMatthew Toffolo's Summary

CONTRABAND, 13min., UK, Drama

Get to know the filmmaker:

1. What motivated you to make this film?

The story is loosely based on personal experience, but it wasn’t so much about ‘telling my story’ but more about addressing a dearth of this sort of story with this point of view, that motivated me to make it. What really struck me was how pro-choice abortion stories, whilst few and far between, often sat into one of two camps; 1) ‘the difficult decision to make’ and 2) a super easy experience. There didn’t seem to me to be much conversation around the physical experience and what happens after the procedure, both physically and mentally. It was this and the desire to highlight the, sometimes, ridiculousness…

1. What motivated you to make this film?

I was impressed by the script. I can remember me trying to choose a script to make a film. I spent a night reading a hundred of scripts and only this one made an impression.

2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?

it took a half of year. Actually it was a challenge to make this film because the filming period was…

It is the terrorizing story of a person sentenced to death who becomes the plaything of their jailers. They are sent walking through a dark room in hopes they will fall into a pit. When that doesn’t happen they are tied down on a table to watch the painfully slow descent of a swinging pendulum with a sharp-edged blade aimed at their stomach. Escaping from the blade did not mean freedom. The walls of the dungeon grow blistering hot first, then squeeze together to push them to the brink of the pit, before being saved at the very last second.
